Today, the Center Theatre Group announced three finalists in the Richard E. Sherwood Award, which included Gina Young and Hana Kim, and myself.
On July 24th, 2011 I was elected to the board of the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry where I served as the group’s secretary.
In the “The North American Puppet Slam Scene in 2010”, I was interviewed by Teresa Smalec for Puppetry International on my work as a curator of short-form puppetry for adults and in my role as co-founder of the Puppet Slam Network.
I was an assistant curator for Handmade Puppet Dreams, Volume 4, Heather Henson’s touring live-action puppet film series which began screening on December 6th, 2009 at Theater For the New City as part of Voice4Vision, a puppet festival. While the volume contained all diffrent kinds of puppetry styles, I was especially interested in selecting puppet shorts that involved music. Volume 4 has been screened in Cape Town South Africa, Calgary, Alberta, San Diego, CA, Conway, AR, Providence, RI, North Bethesda, MD, Orlando FL, Atlanta, GA, New York, NY, Waterford, CT, and Portland ME.
From May 21-24, 2009, I was a puppeteer, puppet fabricator, and kinegram designer for Janie Geiser’s peepshow/diorama performance, Reptile Under the Flowers. Automata and the Museum of Jurassic Technology co-presented 45 performances of Reptile Under the Flowers for small groups over the course of 4 days at the The Foshay Masonic Lodge in Culver City, Los Angeles.
On May 15th, 2009 I earned my MFA degree from California Institute for the Arts (CalArts) in Scenic Design in the Puppetry track from the Theater School and the Cotsen Center for Puppetry and the Arts. I attended CalArts between 2006-2009 under the mentorship of Janie Geiser and Susan Simpson and developed two major productions, Growing Up Linda and Bride of Wildenstein – The Musical,.
In 2008, I was the recipient of funding from the Office of the President at California Institute for the Arts for the workshop of Growing Up Linda at CalArts and the premiere at Venue 13 in Edinburgh. Growing Up Linda was an ensemble actor-puppetry performance in which the daughter of a famous ice cream mogul must come to terms with her troubled past. In 2008, I was the recipient of an Interdisciplinary Grant from the California Institute of Arts for the workshop of Growing Up Linda at CalArts and the premiere at Venue 13 in Edinburgh. Growing Up Linda was an ensemble actor-puppetry performance in which the daughter of a famous ice cream mogul must come to terms with her troubled past. Interdisciplinary Project Grants, administered through the Office of the Provost at CalArts support projects with a significant interdisciplinary element.
In April 12th, 2007 Beyond the Beyond: The Gay Futureworld, in which I was a performer and puppeteer was presented by Cornerstone at the Lilly Tomilin/ Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center, part of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Directed by Paul Zaloom, Beyond the Beyond was a wild, episodic sci-fi romp through the next 1000 years of humanity that explored civil rights, queer history and the queer world of the future through personal stories gathered, scripted, workshopped and performed by GLBT youth, seniors and professional artists.
On July 1st, 2006, I performed my short marionette dance piece, Rango Tango, at the Revolving Museum in Lowell, MA. The performance was part of a special edition of Blood from a Turnip I hosted with Vanessa Gilbert as part of the Revolving Museum’s Pulling Strings: Traditional and Contemporary Puppetry Exhibit. Rango Tango was choreographed with Philip Huber at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center as part of the 2006 National Puppetry Conference with funding the Kevin Clash Minority Scholarship.
