The week of April 25th, 2016, I began unpacking over twelve hundred dolls that I created for my installation (In)/Animate Objects at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery as part of the 2016 COLA Individual Artist Fellowship Exhibition.
When I tasked myself to mass-produce over a thousand dolls, a pop-up community of artist and non-artist collaborators formed in LA and remotely in Louisville, Connecticut, Brooklyn, Boston, Providence and as far as Amsterdam. Our process appropriated aspects of quilting bees. As our hands collectively stitched irregularities, our minds contemplated the idea of identity: a repetition of a repetition for which there is no original.
Thank you to my extended network of friends and family who donated time and resources to help make the dolls happen.

Valley of the Uncanny Dolls:
An interview with Allison de Fren
Mechanical Bride is a feature-length documentary that explores the sf fantasy of creating the perfect woman and the current-day reality of artificial companions in the sex and robotics industries. Filmmaker Allison de Fren approaches her subjects with depth and sensitivity, exploring the roles of Doll / Owner, Real / Synthetic, and Living / Dead. (More)
Most of the time, the dolls were inanimate, but from time to time, I came to the gallery to animate them. (More)
(In)/Animate Objects was made possible with funding from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and through fabrication and assistance from numerous individuals.
